Mobile crane sales in India increased 41 per cent last year to more than 7,700 units. This made them the country’s third largest selling construction machines after backhoe loaders and crawler excavators. However, the market is dominated by locally manufactured pick & carry cranes, which accounted for 96 per cent of sales in 2017. Demand for conventional cranes remained level with 2016 levels at some 320 units.
Crane demand in India reached a low point in 2015 and has grown well since. The previous peak in demand was 11,601 units in 2011, and Off-Highway Research forecasts that close to this volume could be achieved in 2018 in response to India’s current infrastructure investment programmes. There is also demand for mobile cranes from various industrial sectors.
Having said that, the 2019 general elections are likely to be disruptive and equipment sales are likely to stall or decline that year. Growth in mobile crane sales is expected to resume following the election, but the maximum market potential is still seen at around 11,000 units. Within this, sales of conventional mobile cranes should improve with the general trend towards higher lifting capacities which cannot be delivered by pick & carry cranes.
