The construction equipment market in Malaysia exceeded 3,300 units last year, and demand is more stable in the country than in many neighbouring southeast Asian nations.

In recent years, the expansion of the Malaysian economy, based on a strong industrialisation drive and surging foreign investment, has stimulated the construction and related sectors, which has led to an increase in demand for all types of construction equipment.

Crawler excavators account for nearly 60 per cent of total demand for new construction equipment in Malaysia and developments in this sector therefore have a fundamental impact on the overall market. Meanwhile demand for wheeled loaders has grown significantly in the last 10 years, stimulated largely by the advent of Chinese suppliers, whose relatively low priced products have encouraged many traditional buyers of second-hand machines to upgrade to a new one for a similar financial outlay.

This has helped steer the market away form used equipment, sales of which used to outnumber new machines by a factor of two-to-one, to make Malaysia a much more significant market for new machines.
