The market for mobile cranes in India totalled nearly 10,000 machines last year, and came close to 12,000 in 2018. However, demand is dominated by locally manufactured pick & carry cranes. The market for conventional mobile cranes is currently running at just over 400 machines per year.

Having said this, there are developments in the pick & carry sector, with a move towards ‘New Generation’ designs which feature a front-mounted cab, higher travel speeds and improved safety characteristics. The report discusses this trend and the share of sales for this type of crane in detail, as well as analysing demand in the modest conventional crane segment.

Demand for equipment in India slowed last year due to the disruption caused by the general election. Sales will fall again in 202 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the medium- to long-term prospects for the mobile crane segment remain strong, with growth expected to return in 2021.
