With just over 500 of ride-on rollers sold last year, the market for compaction equipment in Italy was a s strong as it has been since the global financial crisis. Sales still grew year-on-year despite the Covid pandemic. However, volumes were still a long way short of the boom period in the mid-2000s when the market briefly ran at more than 1,200 machines per year.
Off-highway Research’s new report, The Compaction Equipment Industry in Italy said, “Sales are widely predicted grow this year as tenders for road maintenance projects and, to a lesser extent, earthmoving schemes continue to be awarded. This positive outlook is also based on confirmed government support in the form of fiscal incentives. After this, however, sales are then anticipated to fall for two years.
“The first thing to remember when assessing the likely path of market development is just how low the market had previously been and, in contrast, how high recent sales have risen. Although average sales in the next five years of over 500 units annually might seem low compared to the peak years of 2004 to 2008 – a period widely regarded as having unhealthily inflated markets across the majority of construction equipment types – they are two and a half times higher than the period from 2011 to 2015. They are also 25 per cent higher than sales in the past five years and thus represent what is widely considered as a relatively healthy level of demand.”
