The first backhoe loaders sold in China were low technology machines based on tractors. They were cheap and had a poor reputation in the market, which was a hinderance to their adoption. Although the machines available are now of a much higher standard, and the multi-function and mobility advantages of backhoe loaders are better understood, the lack of any real tradition of using these machines continues to be a hindrance.

While domestic sales may be falling as a result, production of backhoe loaders in China has never been higher. “The very active overseas demand and the bottleneck in supply chains in other main markets helped stimulate exports of all products made in China,” said Off-Highway Research’s new report, the Backhoe Loader Industry in China. The report added that last year 96 per cent of China’s backhoe loader production was exported.
