The dump truck market in France faltered in 2015 and 2016, with the end of several major projects coinciding with a deceleration in the economy as a whole. However, Off-Highway Research forecasts that sales should return to the former levels of 300-350 units per year by 2020.
These findings are contained in Off-Highway Research’s latest Equipment Analysis on the dump truck industry in France, which forms part of the company’s European Service. The report, which covers both rigid and articulated dumptrucks, is also available to buy for non-subscribers here.
Following a sharp decline in sales in the years following the global economic crisis, the French dumptruck market had improved up until 2012. However, demand at this point remained only about half of what it was in the pre-crisis peak years. Key projects in this period included high speed rail, motorway and airport schemes. However, sales sank to just 146 truck sales in 2015 – almost as low as had been seen in 2009 – as these projects finished and the economy stalled.
However, the outlook for the coming years is cautiously optimistic. “On the assumption that additional projects will come to fruition, given the low level of purchases in recent years, many machines will be due for replacement, allowing the market to stabilise. However, a return to sales of 500 trucks or more per year is not likely, as there were artificial factors to create that bubble that burst in 2008 and they will not return,” said the report.
