German crane segment in good health

By Chris Sleight |  25 August 2020

Some 660 mobile cranes were sold in Germany last year according to the new Mobile Cranes Germany equipment analysis from Off-Highway Research. In addition to rising sales of traditional all-terrain, lattice boom crawler and truck cranes over the last four years, this peak also reflects a sharp increase in telescopic boom crawler crane sales. This relatively new style machine is now the second best selling type of mobile crane in Germany after all-terrain cranes.

The report also looks at crane production, and this is significant in Germany which is the main global source for all-terrain cranes. More than 3,300 mobile cranes of all types were produced in Germany last year, with 85 per cent being all-terrain cranes. Some 80 per cent of the mobile cranes manufactured in Germany last year by Grove (Manitowoc), Liebherr and Tadano were exported to other countries.

Sales of mobile cranes in Germany will dip this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, Off-Highway Research’s forecast is for growth to resume in 2021 and for last year’s peak in sales to be surpassed in the medium term.
