According to Off-Highway Research’s new report, The Mini Excavator Industry in India, sales of these machines stood at just over 2,700 units last year. Although a small volume for a country which is one of the five largest equipment markets in the world, it should be borne in mind that sales of mini excavators were almost non-existent in India until the early 2010s.
One of the key factors which has influenced demand is that several manufacturers are now producing mini excavators in India. JCB and Tata Hitachi are the incumbents in this area, and they have recently been joined by Sany. In 2022 those manufacturers were three of the four largest suppliers of mini excavators in India and met 50 per cent of demand with domestically built machines.
Off-Highway Research expects strong growth in percentage terms for mini excavator sales in India in the coming years, although volumes will remain relatively modest.
“The market acceptance of mini excavators has been growing, and they are now being increasingly demanded by customers, even though they are still being used in specialist niche applications. The positive point is the expanding scope of usage with the new application areas that are being regularly discovered,” said the report.
