New North American rental report now available

According to Off-Highway Research, rental companies in North America bought almost 110,000 earthmoving, compact and materials handline machines in 2023, accounting for a third of the total equipment market. The value of these purchases were put at US$16.3 billion and took the total estimated rental fleet in the region to more than 820,000 machines.

The International Rental News IRN-100 ranking of the world’s 100 largest rental companies listed 34 North American businesses in the league table. These had revenues of US$40.8 billion in 2023, a 23 per cent increase on the previous year.

The three largest rental companies in the world – United, Sunbelt and HERC – are all American. Unsurprisingly these three also topped the Access Lift & Handler rankings of the largest telehandler and access platform fleets in North America (and therefore most likely the largest in the world). These rankings revealed that the access platform fleet – a machine type outside Off-Highway Research’s North American coverage - of the region’s 30 largest owners grew 6 per cent to some 483,000 machines last year, while the 30 largest telehandler owners had a combined machine parc of more than 87,000 units.

Analysis of the mobile crane rental industry based on American Cranes & Transport’s league table showed the regions’ 100 largest operators owned a fleet of some 18,365 machines last year, with a total lifting capacity of 3.2 million tonnes.
