Sales of hydraulic excavators in China increased by 16 per cent in the first half of 2026

The China Hydraulic Excavators 2026 special report, published in Off-Highway Research’s China service, provides detailed analysis of the current state of the country’s hydraulic excavator market. The report updates a popular study first published in 2025 by OHR on the Chinese global hydraulic excavator industry.

The report concentrates on the market in China for hydraulic excavators, which are defined as being capable of turning through 360 degrees, mounted either on tracks or wheels, and which have a service weight from 6.2 to well over 100 tonnes. The report’s findings are based on an extensive interview programme undertaken with major manufacturers and their dealers during the first five months of 2026.

The report provides analysis of construction activity, market size, production volumes, machine populations and end users, as well as including detailed profiles on the country’s largest equipment manufacturers, importers and distributors.

The first quarter of 2026 registered an annual increase of 16 per cent over the same period in 2025 with a total of 25,900 units sold, although momentum seems to have stalled in the second quarter of the year. However, according to OHR, annual demand for this year is expected to grow by 8 per cent to 79,000 units, and peak at 100,000 units in 2029, when the China Stage V emissions standard (CSV) will be implemented. The prebuy activity should lead to a decline of 8 per cent in 2030, while the penetration of electrification will grow incrementally from 1 per cent in 2025 to 10 per cent in 2030.

This report is essential reading for companies active in China, or those considering entering the market. It is intended as a decision-making tool for manufacturers, distributors, rental companies, financial institutions, importers and all other stakeholders in the hydraulic excavator market.
